Two Chinese kindergarten students die after rival school poisons yogurt
Chinese state media say two girls have died after eating poisoned yogurt placed outside their kindergarten at the direction of the head of a rival school.
The Xinhua News Agency says police believe the poisoning was motivated by competition for students between the schools.
It says the woman confessed that she injected the yogurt with rat poison and asked a man to place it with notebooks on the road to the rival kindergarten in Pingshan county in Hebei province. (Tyler Anderson / National Post files)

In Nigeria, the Lady Mechanic Initiative trains women to fix cars. Founder Sandra Aguebor-Ekperuoh started the initiative after having a vision from God.
She has trainee mechanics all around the country. Some of the young women are from disadvantaged backgrounds, some former sex workers and others just hugely enthusiastic.
Faith Macwen, who graduated from the Lady Mechanic Initiative in 2009, now works for a top automobile company in Nigeria.
Macwen says men at work were initially dismissive. “Actually, at first, the male were feeling, ‘You can’t do it, that it’s our world.’ But we made them realize — I made them realize — we can do it. I want other ladies to take up the opportunities. Go out. When you have a flair for something, go in for it,” she says. “Don’t let anybody tell you you can’t do it. You can do it.”

German Shepherd Adopts Human Boy in Landmark Case
After nearly a year of court proceedings, a German shepherd named Cody has won the right to adopt a young boy who was displaced from his home in 2011.
“Cody has been caring for the boy for nearly two years, but when he decided to make it official, the adoption agency balked and the courts got involved,” says Tony Shek, Cody’s attorney. “For starters, he’s a single parent. Also, he’s a dog.”
Until this point, there had been no legal precedent for inter-species adoption of humans. “It’s very hard to make history in the court system. But we proved that Cody provides a loving and financially stable home, and that he is the best caregiver for the boy. Denial of his adoption rights would be tantamount to discrimination. We are thrilled with the outcome.”
Legal experts say the decision may have implications for a number of similar cases still pending.

Emerging Danish ceramicist Maria Rubinke blends the childlike and innocent with the grotesque in her sculptural work, creating pristine porcelain toys and corrupting them with streams of red glaze emanating from rips and tears in their anatomies. The porcelain toys become biological beings whose visceral injuries can be difficult to look at despite the chubby-cheeked figures’ adorable countenances. Elements of the grotesque and the cute break down, pulling the viewer between these opposing poles. Take a look at some of Rubinke’s sculptures below.
